Costador is a winery in Spain where the grape vines were planted in 1954 – that’s right, these are some old vines! This winery specializes in rare, indigenous varietals that are hand picked and fermented naturally, using the wild (naturally occurring, not added) yeast. “Xarel-lo” is the actual name of the grape varietal – have you ever heard of it?

Because it’s natural, a bit of funkiness is expected, and this wine delivers that without being unpalatable. It’s smoky, creamy, a bit tropical, still fresh, with some funk. That’s why this wines as celebs is none other than Shia LaBeouf! He probably hasn’t showered for a couple days and has maybe smoked a couple cigarettes but is somehow still attractive? He probably watches the stars at night with some deep thoughts and really cares about recycling.

That’s exactly what this wine is. At first you wonder if there is too much funk? And as you go back for more to figure it out, the bottle is gone before you know it. And maybe you want it again? Just as mainstream as funky, this wine can pair with Transformers and The Peanut Butter Falcon.

This wine is a great stepping stone for those wanting to explore natural wines - or more interesting ones at least.
