Sancerre, what a little haven of Sauvignon Blanc. If you were ever confused about what exactly Sancerre is, it is simply a region. Specifically, it’s in the Loire Valley of northern France, and is most famous for growing Sauvignon Blanc. If you order a Sancerre, it is made from Sauvignon Blanc. If you order a Sauvignon Blanc, it’s not necessarily Sancerre. Simple!
This varietal is universally loved and for good reason. It’s dry, high acid, and the good ones are complex. They can range from being really floral (orange blossom, lily) to their signature herbaceousness – green pepper is the most commonly used description along with grass and asparagus. You’ll only find green pepper in one other wine – the relative of Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon.
That’s why this wine as a celeb is Cameron Diaz. Much like Cameron, this wine is everything you want it to be. It’s bright and sunny, crisp and refreshing. It has both the floral and herbaceous notes that it should but isn’t overwhelmed by either. It’s stronger on the nose than on the palate (read: it smells more intense than it tastes) with lemon, grass, and something mineral like seashell or flint. It’s got the range of sweet Cameron in Charlie’s Angels to the bite and acidity of her roles in The Sweetest Thing and There’s Something About Mary. If you throw it her way, she can take it on!
I order this wine by the glass at my neighborhood pub, the Copper Still and like to get it with their blistered shishito peppers. This wine would go great with most of the bar appetizers – fries, brussels sprouts, pretzels, because it can keep up with most of what you put in front of it. I’m weirdly craving some brie with it… not sure if that would work or not as this wine lends itself better to goat cheese, but look, listen to your body.
PS last time I ate dinner at 4 Charles Prime Rib, Cameron Diaz was there in a booth with her husband and she is CAPTIVATING in person. Just thought you should know.
