I'm usually one of those people that opts for unoaked Chardonnay because I'm not trying to drink a stick of butter, you feel? (I'm lookin at you, Rombauer). But this 2018 vintage from Alexander Valley in Sonoma, CA is still crisp and refreshing while imparting the lovely subtly and richness that oak has to offer. For my original ode to Chardonnay, see the Chardonnay 101 - The Basics post.

Something really fun about this wine is how it opens up and develops as you're drinking it. When you have your first sip when the wine is coldest, it may not taste all that complex. I'm a gal who likes her wine cold (I'll even throw an ice cube in every now and again. SHAME!). But as this wine warms up, you get the treat of experiencing the warmer fruits that the lovely California sun imparts. Think apricot, peach, pineapple, and maybe a hint of toasted coconut. Remember, as you follow the sun the grapes take on warmer flavors!

That's why this wine is Katy Perry. It's full of dichotomies - bold but fresh, smooth but not sweet, warm but crisp. And much like Katy Perry's Hot n Cold, this seems to have all those qualities wrapped up in one nice package. No swirling cupcake bras here (and don't pair this with cupcakes) but the underlying vanilla and coconut from the oak give that sweet quality without actually imparting sweetness on the palate. It's light and bright while still having depth. Wipe off your cherry chapstick before diving in and enjoy this medium bodied Chardonnay.

Jac Cole is a super experienced winemaker and knows what he's doing with this wine. Retailing at $24 or less I would rate this as excellent value. This bottle would be IDEAL to bring as a hostess gift next time you're invited for dinner. This won't offend any palates with over the top oak and creaminess, instead you'll simply enjoy all the benefits of barrel aging.

It will go with most things you eat - not ideal for red meat but all other meats and seafood (salmon!) are great options. Fresh pastas, risottos, or like, mild depression are all great fits for this wine. Just go open the bottle already.
