What can I say, I am OBSESSED with Riesling. If you're like me, you slept on Riesling for 10 years, thinking it resembled the wine coolers you drank in high school. I may be projecting there, but I cannot say this enough - not all Riesling is sweet, and dry Rieslings are some of the most complex, exciting, and delicious wines out there. Riesling needs to be your new religion and if you need a refresher, see my Riesling 101 - The Basics post.
One way to know you're getting a dry Riesling is by a handy new feature on many labels that include a sliding scale from dry to sweet so you can see where the particular wine lands. This one is dry, and you can tell if you look really closely at the above picture of this wine - bottom center of the label.

That's why if this wine was a celeb, it would be Edward Norton. Seems like such a sweet guy, right? He is, but more than that he's actually super intellectual and has incredible range. And he can do just about anything. This particular California Riesling made by Alexandra Farber, has the same dry sense of humor. It is crisp and bright with notes of pear and apricot. It has a medium finish and nice body. It's got the tropical fruit sweetness that he had as Father Brian in Keeping the Faith (most underrated movie of all time) and the acidity and edge of Steve from the Italian Job. This particular one is not going to win the Academy Award, but it might get served at them. With a mineral-y finish, you might just think this is Chardonnay!
This particular wine from Nakedwines.com, a wonderful company I support that helps independent wine makers with angel investing. Check it out if you're interested, a lot of the wines I write about will come from there because I buy a case every so often.
You can pair this wine with just about anything, but I found it to be highly drinkable on its own. Pop this in the freezer for 15 minutes before you serve for a delightful chill. Do I want to go to happy hour with Edward Norton? Yes. Will I settle for a glass of this in my apartment? Also yes.
